Yeah, chicago is home. always will be home. yeah, at this point, i'm aware i've idealized it in alot of ways. but at least I *know* that.

right now, my to-do list looks like this:


  • research asatru and see if I can find enough information for an unbiased research paper. if not, pick another neopagan religion and go to town. yeah, not so much with the unbiased. where I *can* find information, it's all "HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS WHITE SUPREMECY RELIGION HISSSSSSSSSSSSS." There is absolutely nothing giving me the other side of the coin to make this an unbiased paper. SO! Neopaganism it is.

  • write the memoir/personal essay for creative writing

  • answer history questions my answers are in. now to respond to the twits.

  • analyze an ad for comp apparently this is an unnecessary exercise this week. Good to know

  • do grammar exercises (oh my god, so boring. Sometimes having grammar come easy is a pain. ~sigh~)

  • see if i can get a little ahead in the online classes, so i don't have to fight with it while i'm

  • pack 3/4 to 4/5 done. i'm largely down to the things that can't be packed until the morning of (toothbrush, toothpaste, flat iron, hair brush, and so on). and munchkin's hoodie. but he's napping, and i'm not going in there until he's awake again.

  • clean the house. at least so it's not so sandy. augh. i hate sand



list to be editted as I do things, but I'm doing fairly well, i think, considering. THe house cleaning thing is, largely, finished, minus picking up the living room. and sweeping it. the whole thing. again. because i can never, ever stop sweeping in this place.

I hate sand.

I got my hair cut. 'cause the other was just...not growing out well and i couldn't come up with anything to do with it for the wedding. I'm of two minds about the results. On one hand, it's cute and i like it well enough. On the other, it's about three inches longer than I asked for, and i'm really fucking irritated with that. Damn you for moving to Jacksonville, Heather. ~grumbles~

So far this morning, I have:


  • nearly kiled myself getting out of bed when my bad knee decided it didn't want to hold me up. No, i don't know why. Yes, it decided to cooperate. Sort of.

  • gotten the littles emo off to school. where I had to sit for five minutes while he decided to fucking sob. Again with the not knowing why. He's never had a problem with me leaving him at school. I have no idea.

  • gotten a pot of potato soup going. a huge pot. gigantic. as in a gallon and a half of stock and water. mmmmm soup.



things i still need to do:

oh. and do laundry. and start packing. er. well, continue, 'cause i've got the munchkin started. This will be a hard trip to take. It's the first one that i'll be there on my terms. Well...okay, that sounds weird. I've been back to Chicago since we left, once for a week for TLE's godmother's college graduation, but i had no outside transportation and i was there to help everyone with the parties and such, so not on my own terms. Also there for Grandpa's 80th (a 36 hour trip from *HELL*) and Grandpa's funeral (obviously not on own terms, there). Other than that...haven't been back. This time, the first part of the trip will be spent with the bride, helping her do stuff, keeping her from murdering people, and so on, but the last three days?

the last three days are *mine*. Apartment hunting, visiting with friends, wandering around and showing TLE where i grew up, went to school, played... it's going to be so hard to get back on the plane to go home. At least i know this. ~sighs~

So...what have I been up to? Working hard on school, as you've seen some evidence of. Wrangling TLE. getting ready for this trip, which really has loomed up faster than expected. that's honestly about it, though. School's been most of it, with some seriously writing intensive courses this semester. I'm not objecting to it in the slightest, because I wanted thse courses (well. half of them) and they need to be done, but omg. lots. of. writing.

I think i'm gonna be fiddling with my layout soon. The blue-on-black is pretty but it can be hard to read. I don't think the changes are going to be too drastic, and the header's going to stay put, but...some schtuff needs to change.

...there was more. this was actually supposed to be a post of some substance. and yet...it isn't. ~eye rolls at self~ the best intentions, seriously.

Oh! I remember one of the things i was gonna say. I'm not reviving a meme or anything, but feel free to ask me anything! Sex, TLE, Politics, Fandom Preferences, you name it, I'll answer it. :) Nothing ventured, nothing gained! ~laughs~

So i'm not one to filter. I'm really not. I think they're a pain, and if you're my friend, if you're around, you probably wanna know what's going on with me, right? :P ~occasionally has a healthy ego~ However, There's somet stuff that's going to start getting posted that I think, maybe, would be better if I asked who wants on it, etc. there are some things that will never be filtered (fic, for example), but there are others that I know not everyone wants to read, so I'm going to give you a choice. I...don't have the poll feature, so you're going to have to actually comment, but you're all big boys and girls. You can handle it. ;)

  • School--this filter will include snips from papers, rantings aboutprofessors, classmates, or me bemoaning the stupidity of trying to be a full time student and fulltime parent at the same time.

  • Original Fiction--exactly what it looks like. This one's going to be fairly limited, so please don't be offended if you don't wind up on it, even if you express interest. I could put the people on it that i think would enjoy reading and that I want to be able to read, but I would invariably include someone who just was not interested, so it's safer this way.

  • Political--this...may get a lot of use, but then it may not. It reallydepends on how the next few months go. I'll tell you up front that of the two current politcal candidates, I support Barack Obama. I am a curious mix of Democratic and Republican sensebilities with an increasingly healthy wish to just say fuck them all. :P This one will also be tightly guarded so again, if you say you'd like to be and *aren't* put on it, please don't be offended



whatever other filters I come up with be arbitrarily decided, so... :P Of course, there's always the "I want it *all*, bitch" option, which...some of you will probably wind up getting if you don't comment and tell me otherwise. :P

i'm going to be sick. I appear to have lost three years of writing. almost 200k words on original fiction is...gone

it doesn't seem to have made it from it's back up disc, i can't find the back up disc, and i can't figure out what online file storage site i used. or rather, if it's the one i think i might have used, it doesn't exist any more.

ETA: well, i found 2004's nano. *THANK YOU* [info]faded_memories for reminding me to look in old journal archives. 2005's is still 100% MIA. 2006's is with someone else. so i'm only down about...~tries to think~ i think that was 61K. but, i don't *actually* remember what I wrote? so... 2004 was the one i was panicking about, and I found that, so I'll live. THat'll teach me, though.

As some of you know, i do this...newsletter thing, called the Morning Glory, of fics that I've read and enjoyed. It started as a way to help [info]dreamyraynbo keep up with bandom fic since I was reading more than she was at the time, and then it just...snowballed. Lately, it's been pretty much just panic fic, since that's what bandom's all about right now, and i've been getting frustrated.

I'm glad I didn't give up, though, because I wouldn't have found this gem(THANK YOU [info]stephanometra!!!!). Taken directly from the latest edition of the morning glory, because seriously, y'all have to read this:

**Panic GSF is the technical focus, but it's panbandom and everyone makes an appearance.  "(I'll Be) The Only Thing Between You and the Stars At Night"  oh. my. god.  Star Trek AU that i honest to god wonder how i missed when it was posted a couple weeks ago.  It was *gorgeous* with so many different details and wonderful story lines.  I just..~flailing~  I"ve always liked Star Trek, and to see it combined somasterfully with Bandom is just really fricking awesome.  There's pairings left and right that make sense and are normal to read about (Gabe/William, Frank/Gerard for example) but theres mixing and matching and wonderfulness.  And the different species that were included and their histories and just...~FLAILS~  Go read.  GO.  http://moku-youbi.livejournal.com/5093.html  9 parts, linked sucessively at the bottom.


I can't stress how awesome I found this. I fully accept thatno everyone shares my taste in fic, or even has the same impression of the same fic. That said, I *really* think that everyone should at least try this. I really, really do. It's beautifully plotty as well as smoking hot in parts and is just so so worth it.

I just did a massive cut of my flist. I want you all to know it's nothing personal, but I haven't read any hp fic in a year, and i just don't wander around ij like i used to (mostly because my current fandom is stubbornly entrenched at livejournal), but whatcha gonna do? PLus add a semester of what's likely to be extremely writing eintensive courses, and i'm just plain not gonna have the time.

so the meme is to go back through your journal entries and see what you were doing. Well. I can do that. to a certain degree. but I also am going to go ahead and back it up to the beginning of the century, 'cause i know exactly what i was doing. So:

2007-- I was three days from starting my insanejournal, and on the 4th, i made two posts. 1 was the declaration of independence, the other was a meme. both are flocked, or i'd link. I didn't actually make a post on the 3rd, so that's as close as you get.

2006--I was wishing [info]werewindle and [info]missmozell happy birthdays (HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIRLS!!) full of naked men. It was a good day. ~grin~

2005--Again, no posts on the 3rd, but on the fifth, i posted a meme that generated a battlecry. "I'm going to spank you so thoroughly, Buddha will explode!"

2004--I was bemoaning my inability to comfort my child and learning how to animate icons though i'm pretty sure that the icon on the post isn't the one i made.

2003--i had no internet, so i didn't post, but basically, I was letting Littlest Emo's father destroy me. No, i'm really not joking about that. Also...~eyes the date~ I was about to get pregnant. :P

2002--I met the littlest emo's dad. online. which is why you'll find me being careful with y'all until i get to know you better. i was also getting ready to start at FGCU, and, oh yeah, i was incredibly bitter due to the whole exchange thing and my mother straight up telling me about two weeks before the 4th that, "I don't like you. I want the daughter I had before back." No, i'm not making that up.

2001--I was 5 days away from leaving for my exchange. I was going insane. Packing up enough stuff to live for a year plus packing up my bedroom so my family could move to Denmark while i was gone. it was *crazy*

So i'm a music geek. I'm sure that fact has not escaped any of you. I'm about to prove how much of a geek I am. ~grin~

I snagged the John Coltrane complilation album, A Man Called Trane, from Starbucks the other day, because I have played the sax for..a really long damned time. Uhm. 16 years? I think? i've sorta lost count. Anyway! I'm a saxophonist, plus i love jazz. and hi, Coltrane? Epitome of jazz sax.

It's kind of awesome.

so I got the album. and then I ripped it at 320. So these are...not small. So because i know that there's a few of you out there that can't handle huge files due to your connection restraints, i've got them uploaded singly. If you only download one, I recommend My Favorite Things. it's gorgeous. And yes, the se are all m4a.

~clings to the internet~ oh. my. god. i've actually been home for a while, but I was busy trying to make this place as safe as possible. That...really wasn't the easiest thing to do. Jesus. Here's...what happened.

I got as far as I-75 with...well, i would say minimal fuss, but it was as creepy as fuck. bodies, abandoned cars, and shuffling, ambling people everywhere. i nearly hit people a few times. It took me half an hour to get the block to let me past. I'm still not sure how it happened, except that i completely abused my son's tearful little voice and put him on speakerphone. Yes. I used my son to get me through a police blockade. Call me a bad mother if you want, but god damn it, I wasn't leaving my baby alone when this shit was going down.

I...sped home after that, but I think speeding is relative when you're terrified for your life and that of your loved ones. I saw more abandoned cars, smoke from what was burning houses turned to grassfires... I think I even saw a gator that had been turned. I...really don't even want to think about how that happened, or how that's going to be stopped.

If it can be.

I finally got to my brother and my son, barricaded into my brother's room. Mom and Dad never made it home. Dad was on the east coast this morning, doing an install, and...well, I only hope t hat he managed to barricade himself into the pump house, because the alternatives are just too terrifying to comprehend. Mom was in fort myers for work like I was. I can only imagine that she couldn't get past the varricade. Mama, if you get to read this...we love you, and we're trying to find a way to get you out.

So now, it's just me, the brother, and the littlest emo. the dogs are here, but they're...whing and antsy, as you can imagine. the baby's asleep now, curled up between my brother and I. my brother is as quiet and pale as I've ever seen him. I don't...i don't even know, you guys. Aunt Mel and Sean aren't answering their phone. Deir stopped answering hours ago. the cell network is down here, so anyone else, in other towns...

We're going to power down everything, try and keep the light to a minimum. I don't know if that even has a hope of working, but it's all we have at this point. Tomorrow...well. Hopefully we get to see the sunrise.

So. Uhm. fuck? Apparently there...was this comet that i missed seeing last night because i was busy being slammed in the sinuses by a sledgehammer. And it...like, infected everyone with this...i don't even know, zombies, i suppose. shitshitshitshitshit.

Did lunch with Rachel and Deir, in the hopes of having some normallacy in this really bizarre morning, and instead, it just got worse. Abandoned cars everywhere, people wandering the streets, Deir got fucking bit...(guess I know why the barista tried for me this morning?)

Then Rachel's friend called. And I can't. get. home. Damn. it. I can't get to the littlest emo. They've quaranteed fuckin' Ft. Myers, not letting anyone in or out past 75. I called the brother creature, asked him to go get the kid from school, and he said he would, that things weren't as bad there yet, or something.

I...went back to work. I couldn't think of anything else. I mean...I could have tried to get to mom, but the only way i know of involves 75, and since they're not letting anybody on...coulda gone home with Rachel, I suppose, but if her family had been infected or something...I just...yeah. so i'm back at work, where at least I'll get paid?

My brain is weird sometimes.

So...anyone know where Cobra Starship is right now? They promised they'd be throwing the party when the world was ending.

that has to be one of the weirdest drives into work i've ever had. There were fewer cars on the road for one, and considering I was running late, i really wasn't expecting that. there were cop cars everywhere, though, and other emergency vehicles.

Weirdest shit happened at starbucks, too. I was paying for my coffee, and when the girl handed me back my card, she...tried to bite me. O_o now, i'm all for fun times with biting, but, i'd really prefer to know you first? I know i'm in there a lot, but...uhm...yeah. nateface. i...don't even know. but, yes. weird.

i was late to work, but not one really seemed to notice. There aren't a lot of people here today. If I get locked out at lunch again, like I did last week? I'm going to be one unhappy camper. :P

Here are the instructions for playing a game of Winamp that someone else has started.
